Encounters

My mother, sister, and I were returning home after visiting my grandmother who lay dying in a nursing facility in the town behind us. It was nighttime and I was driving. The state highway was very dark but the ride pleasant. About the halfway point while passing through a community, I quickly perceived there to be people or something on the road feet ahead. It was impossible to tell, however, because there was no lighting of any kind, not even the moon. Furthermore, if there were anything on the road, the headlights should reveal it. No cars were in front of us.

In the next moment, I had the eeriest, fleeting sense that something indeed had stood right at the driver’s side of the car, but, still, I saw nothing. In my mind I flashed how stupid it was for folk to be crossing the road like that. They could inadvertently make me a killer. I peered in the rearview mirror to see if I could detect anything in the lights of the distant car that followed—and there it was: the silhouettes of two enormous cows crossing the road. They had to have been black, fully concealed by the darkness, and definitely loose from their enclosure. They had stood only inches out of our path.

What if I had changed lanes?

That story causes me to consider all the “dangers, seen and unseen” from which the Lord delivers each of us daily. All of us have had troubles, some so hard we would have gladly traded someone for theirs. But only Heaven will reveal the ways in which we were saved when everything seemed fairly well. Only God can show us how natural harm and evil vices towered over us, like a wave, to permanently ruin us, but he intervened.

Praise to the Lord who saves. And praise to the God who ordains even our troubles that they might do his bidding.

  1. I fully believe that angels were at work that night. If your car had collided with those cows, the impact would’ve caused possible fatalities, both human and bovine.

    Prayers to your grandmother. 🙂

    • Hi Mark! Guess what? I hosted a book club on The Gift of Fear years back. Love that book! And it’s so true. I had seen Gavin on Oprah and was intrigued. My sister, a participant, and I still talk about the book. Thanks for the comment! Hope you’re well.

  2. It’s weird how your “knower” senses something you can’t see. Something definitely spiritual about it. I’ve had some similar situations in the past, but can’t think of any offhand. My nephew ran into a cow in the road at night during a storm and it totaled his car. We have deer to look out for all the time here, too. God is good!

    • It really is spiritual; and I think the both of us could talk at length on this subject. I got smacked by a deer last year but amazingly no damage. Would love to watch the angels work! Good hearing from you. Cheers!
